He could 100% sing in tune, but I guess he just prefers to smoothen it a bit more. I like it, personally.

I don't really agree. He sings much more staccato here, and his dynamics are significantly more choppy than in the recording. I like the smooth held-out ethereal sound from the recording more. I'm guessing he does it because he can't quantize it here, which makes it harder to sell it.
